Originally from Houston, Texas, Deun was introduced to the artistic approach to photography through her husband, Eric Michael Ward. “He challenged the way I experienced and saw the world,” she explained, which led her to explore photography in a new way. Upon the couple’s move to Chicago, Deun was introduced to the work of Carrie Mae Weems and Gordon Parks, which influenced her visual storytelling, especially from the lens of a black artist. “Chicago has allowed me to explore my own black identity through my work as a photographer. Shooting black women has a psychological impact on my confidence and self-esteem.”

It’s why Deun is passionate about portraiture, and the stories behind them. She shared some of her favorite tips for portrait work with the packed house at Apple Michigan Avenue, and reminded the crowd to share their unique Chicago for the #PhotographChicagoContest, before leading them through an interactive portraits Photo Lab.
