This installment of Venue brings together Shigeto and the fine artist and designer Michael Cina within a performance of the song “Do My Thing” from the recording artist’s recent EP entitled Intermission. Inspired by the book A Century of Artifice, a retrospective of Cina’s artwork for the Ghostly International label, and by Shigeto’s explosive live interpretations of his own electronic productions, this project sought to provide a space that could extend the pair’s creative interaction beyond the stellar cover art and packaging made for Shigeto’s discography. The resulting film also serves as a nod to the significant contributions that Ghostly International has made to progressive culture for the past 16 years.
The kinetic paintings featured in the film’s LED installation, built by set design team Maxrelax, were created by Michael Cina at his Minneapolis studio and captured in a series of video pieces that were then scored live to Shigeto’s performance by the visual designer EFFIXX.
The performance was recorded at New York’s SIR Studios, a go-to rehearsal space since 1973 for artists from the Rolling Stones to Nicki Minaj. Shot by cinematographer Jim McMillan and edited by Matt Hollis, the film was directed by Omid Fatemi, who comes to Venue from the LA film collective What Matters Most (the team responsible for Arcade Fire’s film The Reflektor Tapes). The photography feature was shot by Alex Welsh.
